چکیده

Recent excitement with the human genome project stems partly from the belief that the identi®cation of the genes underlying the nearly 12 000 known genetic disorders will bring us closer to the development of therapies. However, it is still unclear how genetic information can be translated into treatments for inherited disorders. Here, we will review how molecular, physiological and behavioral studies in a mouse model of neuro®bromatosis type I (NF1) have improved our understanding of the learning de®cits associated with this tragically common genetic disorder. We also discuss insights from these studies about the nature and usefulness of animal models of brain disorders. Similar issues are also likely to impact the study of other neurological and psychiatric disorders. q 2001 Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Some crude visual abilities are present at birth, and hence, do not depend on visual experience. However, there are substantial and rapid postnatal improvements. For example, the acuity of newborns is 40 times worse than that of normal adults, largely because of retinal immaturities. Between birth and 6 months of age, there is a ®ve-fold increase in acuity, followed by slow improvement to adult...

In a collaborative research program on attention-de®cit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) initiated 20 years ago at UC Irvine, we adopted Cantwell's (1994) approach to de®ne a re®ned phenotype for use in studies of the biological bases of this disorder. We have used this re®ned phenotype (ADHD-Combined Type without internalizing comorbidities) in our molecular genetic studies of ADHD, which have pa...

Resample and combine: an approach to improving uncertainty representation in evidential pattern classification

Uncertainty representation is a major issue in pattern recognition. In many applications, the outputs of a classifier do not lead directly to a final decision, but are used in combination with other systems, or as input to an interactive decision process. In such contexts, it may be advantageous to resort to rich and flexible formalisms for representing and manipulating uncertain information. T...
